Is Facebook Still Useful?
I’d say no.
First, reasons to keep FB:
1) According to various reports, employers, school officials, etc. think there is SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU if you do not do social networking. Why is that?
My ideas: Employers, School, Government, etc LOVES I repeat LOVES social networking. They can use it to SPY on you. But it’s not really spying, right? You are putting info on the ‘net.
Oh, wait, YOU don’t always put the info on the ‘net. Random people you know might put pictures of YOU on FB WITHOUT your consent, tag you, and places it in a somewhat publicly accessible photo album. They often don’t even restrict the album to certain people (ex: family only). And my favorite? You untag yourself and they just tag you again!
So if your clandestine inquirers cannot look via social network and get the dirt on you, you MUST have something to hide. Yes, just forget maybe you ACTUALLY APPRECIATE YOUR OWN PRIVACY.
2) School work
or your relevant network. Because no one calls anyone anymore. They just want to IM you or expect you have read their facebook – don’t you love the “just gone to the bathroom posts”?
Reasons I’m not really using it:
Apparently, according to facebook’s terms of service or other item, they have the right to HAVE your stuff. So, writers out there, you may want to check before posting your great idea. Maybe they are okay with STEALING it from you. You post it, they own it.
That’s the most recent discussion I’ve heard on facebook for that subject. Could have changed.
And the other reason? I covered that above. I don’t mind tagging me in cutesy pictures — this cute little animal reminds me of you, etc. But I DO mind personally (my photo) being tagged or my stuff (Age of Merrik, etc. promotion) unless I’ve already put it out there.
There has been a LOT of deleted profiles. Sure, don’t be like Weiner. And don’t get your best “Chapter One” ‘borrowed’. If that “borrowing” is really happening, I hope some lawyer out there will attack facebook. It deserves it.
